Olney -- The East Richland High School senior class is being rewarded for their hard work and accomplishments next week while the school district takes time to ponder and celebrate an academic success.
The senior class, who last year took the Prairie State Achievement Exam, wound up with the highest test scores of 104 Southern Illinois high schools and constitutes the highest percentage of students who met or exceeded standards in reading, math, science and social science for the state test.
The scores were compiled from figures in the Wayne County Press, Southern Illinoisan, Belleville News-Democrat and Decatur Herald, according to Superintendent John Hill.
"We did really, really well," Hill reiterated with enthusiasm.
Olney had a score of 74.6 followed by O'Fallon High School (73.8), Okawville High School (73), Livingston High School (72.4) and Nashville High School (69).
The average state score was 55.7.
In order to properly recognize the students, parents and teachers who have helped to make the school district shine with this academic achievement, all students, first grade through seniors, in the school district will be attending an assembly at 10 am Monday at Sliva Auditorium at ERSH.
Hill likened the event to a rally for a school sports team that is having a great season. "We want to motivate our kids as best we can."
Hill also added that state officials have been invited to attend the assembly including Gov. George Ryan, who was unable to participate.
